Pitcher rate indexes explained

Compare recorded ERA, WHIP, strikeout and walk rates with the pooled reference for the same season, phase and batting side.

Definition and interpretation

WHIP+, BB/9+ and ERA index = 100 × reference rate / player rate; K/9+ = 100 × player rate / reference rate.

100 is the pooled retained reference for the same season, phase and batting side; higher is better. Reference rates use summed counts divided by summed outs, including zero-out appearances.

Coverage and limits

No park adjustment. ERA index is not ERA+. Split ERA remains unavailable. Unknown stance enters All only. A zero adverse rate with positive outs is unbounded; missing or zero-out denominators remain unavailable.

No minimum target workload; retain recorded outs and batting-side coverage.

Explore available values and percentiles in Leaderboards or in the exact-season Scouting Report. Missing evidence remains unavailable; small samples retain provisional ranks.
